Jijamata Udyaan formerly called Rani Bagh (meaning Queen's Gardens) after the original British name Victoria Gardens, and now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, is a zoo and garden located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. It was laid out in 1861 and is one of the oldest zoos in India.it is only zoo in Mumbai. Originally named for Queen Victoria, it is now named after Jijabai, mother of Shivaji. Type: Botanical Garden Jijamata Udyaan was some time ago called Rani chi Bagh or Victoria Gardens. It is a spectacular zoo garden at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. Additionally, arranged in the Gardens is the Bhau Daji Lad Museum, which is the earlier Victoria and Albert Museum, and is chiefly of streamlined and agrarian interest. On the grounds to the east of the exhibition hall is the mammoth statue of an elephant which was brought there from the Elephanta Caves on Gharapuri.

History

The zoo was originally built in 1861 by the British Empire and was called the Victoria Gardens back then. It was renamed post-independence and is now affectionately called Rani Bagh by Mumbaikars. The zoo is now under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation which was donated to the then called city of Bombay by Mr. David Sassoon, the same Jewish businessman who also developed other heritage structures like the David Sassoon library, Victoria and Albert museum and the beautiful Victoria tower clock which is right inside the udyan.
